The Β£640,000 major strengthening and repair work to Lowood Bridge is on schedule to be completed in time for the Melrose Festival in mid-June 2018.
And while the work is underway, the council is takign the opportunity to do additional surfacing work at the junction of Waverley Road (into Melrose) where it meets the B6374 road (down to Lowood). The work, which will take a few days to complete, will be during the week commencing 14 May, with temporary tr4affic lights in place. Minor delays may be experienced.
Good progress was made throughout April on the masonry works on the bridge and work has started on removing the scaffolding and encapsulation. This is a complex task and will require the use of large cranes.
As the scaffolding comes down, the bridge deck will be cleared to allow for drainage, kerbing and surfacing works to start. Work on an upgrade of the existing traffic light system will also continue. In addition to the works on the main bridge, some repair work is being undertaken to the masonry wingwalls that lead onto the bridge.
